Flight Chops and Bose

I had always worn a beat up old Dave Clark headset…  not because I wanted to, but because I couldn’t afford to upgrade; Or at least I thought I couldn’t.

Moving to a Bose A20® headset has been a game changer for me.

scheyden-boseThe sound quality is truly unbelievable – not to mention the crazy features like bluetooth connectivity for phone calls that are both convenient for opening / closing flight plans from the cockpit, but also a safety feature as you can use it as an alternate way to contact ATC in the event of a com failure.

And it is so comfortable; the slight dull headache I had gotten used to and simply associated with flying is gone – I often fly on commercial airliners to get to “Flight Chops” shoots, but even when I am not planning to fly GA at my destination, the A20 is still in my carry on, because I use it to watch movies and it makes a coach seat feel like first class, because it literally takes you out of the cabin into your own private space with the active noise cancelling. I can not say enough good things about the A20®!

Not only has Bose been a very supportive sponsor helping us to fund the production of some great content, but the A20 is truly an awesome headset and I am proud to wear one – here are a few of my favourite previous episodes that feature the A20:

Next Level Flight Training - NLFT.ca

I’m a Private Pilot, doing my best to stay current and learn. I fly for fun and might just be the least cocky pilot on the internet! My self analysis videos can seem self deprecating at times, but I am trying to learn from the small mistakes to avoid making a big one; I’m happy to share and find it rewarding to help other pilots or aspiring aviators in any way that I can. How does the saying go? “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards”. And in aviation, not all tests are survivable.

My virtual “ride-along” flying videos are aimed and sharing my experiences and giving back to the aviation community which has been so helpful to me. I shoot multi-camera angles, get detailed real time instrument panel shots, and have radio intercom audio. I respect people’s time, so I put a fair bit of work into editing to keep the videos concise and engaging; I add animations and further graphics and voice overs where needed to add context and explanations.

My hope is to continue to grow and evolve the “Flight Chops” project with input and support from the aviation community!

Flight Chops Disclaimer

I am a “weekend warrior” private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience – I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve…. Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share.

Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

  • I am 15 years old and just started training with an instructor. Lately, I’ve been looking for a nice headset to offset costs. After reading many reviews, especially your’s, I have settled on the Bose A20. Can’t wait to find out if I won!

  • How does this compare to a Lightspeed Zulu? I’m thinking about upgrading from a passive headset but I’m concerned about wearing glasses under the ear seals.

  • Been using Bose products around the home but started my flight training with David Clarks. Will have to try the Bose A20 once I get my license.

  • Would absolutely love to win this. 15y/o student pilot thats completely self-funded… Would be great. Good luck to all.

  • I still use the old David Clark headset I bought used over 5 years ago. It might be time to upgrade here soon!

  • I soloed 30 years ago in pursuit of my ticket. Got about halfway through and a new baby arrived. Just about to start back with lessons and would like a fresh start with some great comm equipment.

  • You can tell what an amazing amount of team work and guts the crew had a such young age during the war. Great machine to fly in !!

  • Being a flight student with intensive training lately, I’m afraid I overstressed my good ol’ beginner’s headset, which brought me through my first lessons, including my first Solo. It will get a special place, just not in the cockpit any longer. The good thing is, I got to borrow my friends Bose A20 for a flight and what can I say… I tried to make an international flight out of my lesson to smuggle the headset out of the country so I wouldn’t have to give it back. What an amazing difference. So soft, so comfortable, so luxurious. I need one!!!

  • As a near future flight student, this headsets would fit me very well in my plane training, and very likely in my future Zlin plane 🙂

  • Getting back into the cockpit after a long while away from it… Love the content of your site and would love to have a set of A20s to replace my decade old headset!

  • I’d love to win this headset! I do not own one, so this one would be my first one!
I’m happy I found you guys on youtube. Your videos are amazing!

  • Been borrowing a Bose Headseat that belongs to a friend, and it is so incredible compared to my regular David Clarks Headset! Would love one of these!

  • Hi have not tried the Bose headsets just yet but will be soon. Plan on attending Sun-N-Fun this year during midweek. Would love to own a pair. Enjoy the flight videos, esp since I have a stearman and can relate.
    Keep,up the good work.

  • I have flown with Bose headsets before. Mostly in helicopters doing aerial census work with the doors off so a headset that is comfortable and delivers outstanding sound is a must, Bose certainly did that and I am sure the A20’same are even better now. Currently fly fixed wing with a mix of DC and Sennheiser but an upgrade to the new Bose A20 would be awesome. Keep up the great work Steve.

  • I want to win this headset more than anyone out there! I am going to be starting flying again after 24 years of not flying and cannot afford any headset. My hearing is not so good anymore. As most pilots know that being able to hear ATC is a crucial thing in flight! or for that matter any faze of flight! and I cannot afford not hearing ATC Instructions. With what I have read and heard about these A20 Bose headset, It sounds like the Best headset for someone like me when I begin flying again!

  • I use a Bose A20 headset for my C-130 flying in the USAF. I’ve put hundreds of hours on this headset all around the world, in many different environments, and it’s never let me down. I would love a pair for my civilian flying so I can get the same great experience that I get in the military world.

  • Well, i tried an older version of this headset a couple years ago. It was already amazing, compared to another one i tried when a friend of my parents invite my for a flight when i was younger.
I’m starting the ATPL formation in few months, and the school use some Headset like this one. Not the same generation.
    Love your videos 😉
keep up the good work and fly safe!

  • I’m 15 and flying in a piper cherokee 140. Right now, I’m using my dad’s old headset that he wore for eight years. My goal is to eventually fly commercial. My dad is been telling me to ask for a new headset during Christmas or on my birthday, but I do not want to make him spend that type of money on an A20. It would mean the world to me if I won it. Anyways, love your videos and keep up the good work.

  • I had never used Bose aviation headsets until recently. I had the chance to use the a20 and was thinking back to all the comfort I had missed in the last five years of flying. I am a Bose for life fan!

  • As a flight student FlightChops videos are my favourites as they teach me a lot about things that i would otherwise never known. I am thinking of buying some Dave Clarks for my flight training but i know that the bose A20 are the best there is right know the problem is the price tag they have. But i am for sure getting one of these as soon as i have the money to pay them.

  • I’m still a flight student considering between a passive and an active headset as I’ve never worn one before. From many people I’ve heard the A20 is probably one of the best headsets you’ll find out there. Unfortunately it is very high budget but I hope it would pay off for me if I go for it.

  • I was just surfing YouTube and was glad I found your videos-great content and insight. I loved the floatplane lesson. I’d also love to win the Bose headset!
Keep up the fantastic videos. RJ

  • This would be a amazing headset to have! I am currently a flight student and loving every single minute of it! Thank you for the opportunity to win! Keep making awesome content!
