Single Best Way to Improve Stick & Rudder Fundamentals

This is an other episode from the multipart series covering this mission – playlist here

In this episode of Flight Chops, we’re continuing our cross-part-of-Canada IFR mission returning Blake’s newly purchased PA-32 to its homebase. We stop in Winnipeg and meetup with Luke at Harv’s Air so Blake can experience his first tail wheel and aerobatics lesson. I’ve found tailwheel training to be incredibly helpful in improving my stick and rudder fundamentals, and it has enhanced overall flying skills in general.

Check out HARV’S AIR and schedule your own #Aerobatic training: https://www.harvsair.com
And here’s his new video teaching the Slow Roll: https://youtu.be/RgXlFo_aBlU

The WEIRDEST feeling flight maneuver I’ve ever learned!

I thought I was fairly prepared to handle an accelerated spin – yet upon doing it the first time I froze for a few seconds before I began the correct recovery… Every pilot should seriously consider some form of upset recovery training; even if they don’t want to go insane like I did covering so much more with Luke 🙂

Huge thanks to Harv’s Air for making this happen!

They are one of the very few flight schools in North America that offer basic and advanced aerobatic training to all levels of pilots!

Check them out at http://www.harvsair.com/

There are already several episodes from this series available! Including one flying there in the TBM 850! To keep up with where we are at in the series, search “Pitts S2b” and “TBM” here on the site.

Special thanks to Gill, who killed it as my cinematographer in Winnipeg!

Additional context about the whole Class E control zone thing:

I almost never get to fly in this specific sort of scenario with FSS providing advisory service on an mandatory frequency at a Class E airport.

Thanks to my ATC buddies Ryan and Stephen, here is some additional context about the whole Class E control zone thing:

“I’m not sure of the best way to word it, but as you likely know, class E is abundant, you fly in E a lot with your day to day flying. E is controlled for IFR, and not for VFR. FSS are not controllers and at airports where they provide advisory service – weather, Airport and traffic information – they will also relay IFR clearances from the IFR controller. When flying at such airports your radio procedures are similar to what you would use at a non tower airport, except instead of addressing your calls to “traffic”, you address them to “Radio” and they answer you and give you any required information. Probably way to far into the weeds…

Even stranger is RAAS (remote aerodrome advisory service) as yyg provides at Sydney, and yts provides at yqa, and ysb provides at yxu when the tower is closed.”

An amazing lesson in a fully aerobatic plane.
Watch in HD and you can read the panel!

We’re flying a Bellanca Citabria
Model: 7KCAB

NOTE: This was a great lesson, but it was EDITED down from over an hour to under 20 minutes; Thus, there are some missing details and possible lost context – PLEASE do not look at this as instruction but rather the start to a conversation that you can have with your instructor.

Clarification regarding the prop strike:
When I said “it wasn’t major” I meant it wasn’t a crash or something that involved airframe damage; it happened while taxiing… The crazy thing is, this particular prop strike was almost avoided – the engine was shut down by the time it happened, and it was actually on the “kick back” when it struck… so the trailing edge of the prop was where the damage happened. But still, they took it seriously and went through the full inspection process which is great.

I mention Bob Hoover a couple times in this video. If you haven’t read is book “Forever Flying” I’d highly recommend you check it out. It’s my favorite flying book.
And if you haven’t seen him fly – search YouTube and you’ll find many videos of Bob’s incredible energy management demonstration.

This is an other “epic” long one as I tend to try to aim for ~5 minute videos – but it is a good one, I put a lot of time into editing it to keep it engaging, yet thorough; so please stick it out for the full ~17 minutes.
